Equine health, as with all animals, is directly influenced by the balance of bacteria in the horses digestive tract. The intake of beneficial (probiotic) bacteria by the animal as a part of its natural diet is as important to its survival as eating, drinking water and breathing. In todays world, pastures and feeds contain only a small portion of the beneficial bacteria that horses require as a part of their regular diet to be 100% healthy. Conversely, insufficient beneficial bacteria in horses system can be the direct cause of many common equine ailments and illnesses acute or chronic.


Several things can destroy the intestinal bacterial balance in a horses gut. Overuse of antibiotics destroys good bacteria as well as bad. Moreover, stress, poor diet, pollutants, environmental changes, and prescription drugs greatly deplete beneficial bacteria. Chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and soil sterilizers in agriculture damage the soil ecosystem and the natural flow of bacteria found in the food chain. These chemicals, as well as chemicals in the water supply, greatly reduce the good bacteria that horses should be getting through their natural diet. This allows harmful bacteria to multiply and produce large amounts of toxins and carcinogenic agents.


Beneficial bacteria have incredible power over the immune system. More importantly, however, it is in the area of nutrition that bacteria are key. What is not generally understood is that probiotics are not simply a healthy additive. Rather, it is through the bacteria alone that animals (and all living forms for that matter) are able to assimilate the nutrition from food, create their own vitamins, grow and remain healthy.


It is scientifically proven that beneficial bacteria are responsible for:


  1. Producing natural antibiotics which can fight harmful bacteria.

EM products cannot really be compared to other probiotics found in the market today. The digestive system of horses is designed for handling a variety of plant matter. When stabled, however, a horse can be given a diet that is perhaps too rich in sugars. This can upset the gut flora, which in turn can lead to other problems such as laminitis. Super EM is extremely efficient at reducing odours in stables - especially that of urine. The EM will feed on the urine, both fresh and old, eliminating the smell of ammonia. In doing so, it leaves the stable fresher and far more healthy - not just because the lack of smell, but because the EM will multiply in the stable litter and in doing so will suppress harmful pathogens that might be present. By improving the quality of the stable litter, EM will also reduce hoof ailments. EM, when added to the manure heap, will ensure you end up with excellent manure that doesn't smell since the EM will continue fermenting the manure into a more useful by-product.

Immediately after birth:

Apply 2-3ml EM Pro-Equine Inoculant directly into the foals mouth through a syringe.

1st and 2nd week:

10ml EM Pro-Equine Inoculant per day

2nd until 8th week:

20ml EM Pro-Equine Inoculant per day

3rd month on (and all ages):

o   Mix EM Pro-Equine Bran into the horses feed at a rate of 100g/day.

o   Add EM Pro-Equine Inoculant to the drinking water at a rate of 1:1000.

Handling of illness/disease:

Additional 50ml EM-Pro Equine Inoculant directly into the horses mouth once per day.




Wounds or skin problems:

Dilute EM Pro-Equine Inoculant 1:5 with water and dab the affected area 1-3 times per day.

Odours and inoculation:

Dilute EM Pro-Equine Inoculant 1:20 with water and spray the whole horse once daily for the handling of odours and inoculation against pathogens.




Stall Fumigation:

Spray Super EM diluted 1:1000 with water with a fumigation device 2-3 times per week on the walls and floors of the boxes covered with straw or wood shavings. Spray more frequently where there are droppings and urine In the case of wood shavings spraying can be more generous as these are very absorbent.





The reason for EMs efficacy and results is not, as many people believe, the number of microbes present in the product but, rather the number of microbial species. In the natural world various classes of bacteria are utterly reliant upon each other for growth and stability, as can be seen by the diversity of microbial life in soils and plants. EM technology is one of the only technologies on the planet that allows for a variety of different classes of bacteria to be grown and maintained stably in a probiotic consortium. This consortium dominates any system into which it is introduced, motivating all existing bacteria in that system in a regenerative direction.

Other factors to look at when considering EM Technology based probiotic cultures is that they are all naturally fermented. This means the finished products are raw, containing 40 trace minerals, amino acids (up to 18), various organic acid compounds, nearly 100 types of enzymes, B complex vitamins, Vitamin A as well as the live microbes which make up the solution itself.


The principal classes of microorganisms in EM are:

A. Photosynthetic Bacteria the key to EM.

The photosynthetic or phototropic bacteria are a group of independent, self-supporting microbes, considered to be the most versatile bacteria in existence. In soils and plants, these bacteria manufacture useful substances from the secretions of roots, organic matter and/or harmful gases (e.g. hydrogen sulphide), by using sunlight and the heat of soil as sources of energy. Useful substances developed by these microbes include amino acids, nucleic acids, bioactive substances and sugars, all of which promote growth and development.


These micro-organisms have been on Earth since before there was oxygen. Even more importantly, however, phototropic microbes produce oxygen, amino acids, antioxidants and other substances that enhance life. Other beneficial bacteria can then use the oxygen generated by the phototropic bacteria and they in turn produce carbon dioxide. This is food for the phototropic bacteria - which they readily consume.


The entire key to EM and why it works lies in this following paragraph. If any datum within this document could be considered to be an axiom and of senior importance to anything else, this would be it:


It is the interdependency and mutually beneficial actions of these various microbes which make it possible for them to establish themselves within any environment and motivate the already-existing bacteria in a beneficial and regenerative direction. Any one of these classes of microbes attempting to influence any environment without the others is, therefore, attempting to operate in a synthetic environment because they do not operate alone in the natural world. To word it differently: although the bacteria found in conventional probiotics have properties which are hugely beneficial, they will never be able to function as they should without the other bacteria (namely phototropic bacteria) that are essential to the establishment of viable survival conditions.


B. Lactic acid bacteria

 Lactic acid bacteria produce lactic acid from sugars and other carbohydrates, developed by photosynthetic bacteria and yeast. Therefore, some foods and drinks such as yogurt and pickles have been made with lactic acid bacteria for decades. However, lactic acid is a strong sterilizing compound, and suppresses harmful microorganisms and enhances decomposition of organic matter.


Lactic acid bacteria have the ability to suppress disease-inducing microorganisms such as Fusarium, which occur in continuous cropping programs. Under normal circumstances, species such as Fusarium weaken crop plants, thereby exposing plants to diseases and increased pest populations such as nematodes. The use of lactic acid bacteria reduces nematode populations and controls propagation and spread of Fusarium, thereby inducing a better environment for crop growth.

C. Natural Beneficial Yeasts

Yeasts synthesize antimicrobial and other useful substances from amino acids and sugars secreted by photosynthetic bacteria, organic matter and plant roots. The bioactive substances such as hormones and enzymes produced by yeasts promote active cell and root division. These secretions are also useful substrates for effective microbes such as lactic acid bacteria and actinomycetes.

NB: This product will not promote Yeast overgrowth.

Throughout the 1970s and 80s Dr. Higa pioneered the research that led to the development and commercialization of EM technology. This natural biotechnology has since been successfully commercialized throughout world markets in human health, agriculture, livestock and industrial waste treatment. Thousands of research and efficacy studies have been conducted and documented in projects, conferences and books around the world.

Originally, EM was developed for use in agriculture (crop farming) as an alternative to agricultural chemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers. EM however is not a conventional fertilizer and unlike the purpose of fertilizers, the purpose of EM is to increase the number of beneficial microorganisms in the soil. This improves the soil's microbial health and promotes a healthy environment for plants. It can also be used as a processing tool to manufacture organic fertilizers.

From crop farming, its application flowed naturally into livestock. EM is actively used in livestock operations, including hog, cattle/dairy, and poultry. From livestock, the positive effects on the livestock waste and effluent into lagoons and rivers led to the use of EM for environmental purposes: from land/soil remediation to water purification. EM environmental applications throughout the world have included cleaning polluted waterways, lakes and lagoons, in septic systems, municipal wastewater treatment plants, and landfills/dump sites. As EM became used extensively in livestock, research began into its use as a functional food supplement for human health. It was discovered that EM exhibits very beneficial effects as an antioxidant and probiotic on the digestive system.
